Notes-Environment

Page history last edited by melanie 15 years, 4 months ago

Endanger species:

The main point of our readings are the endanger species.

More specifically, we read about the bees, wolf and Amazon deforestration

All topic are related to deforestration and to the environment.

For examples, concerning the honeybees (which are the only type of bees who are disappearing), we don't know what are the real causes of their disappearing. But some scientists think that pesticides and the pollution environment can be related to their disappearing.

Concerning Wolf, we guess (because they didn't mentionned very clearly in the article a reason) that they disappear because of the reduction of their environment, the woods and also because of the hunting.

Pollution:

We read thre articles about pollution. There are many type of pollution and we chose to three of them

- Air pollution : The world Health Organization made a study who shows that air pollution causes lot of (prematured ) death with diseases (heart diseases, respiratory infections, lung cancer) that could be avoid if we reduce the air pollution.

- Water pollution : Fertilizer and manure causes nitrates pollution of soil. This can pollute the drinking water because some families were tested and they found they had more nitrates than the limit authorized.

- Soil pollution: the article shows that one of the main reason of the soil pollution is shortage of food, which can be true in case of war.  To help producing more food, the agriculture uses chemicals and pesticides to grown faster. Another source of soil pollution is the glass industry which uses the Arsenic to eliminate the green color. this chemical is rejected in the nature by the industry and causes pollution.

These three types of pollution are in a vicious circle which means that air polluted rains which polluted rivers and soils. The human is the main actor in this vicious circle.

Ways to protect teh environment:

We found different sources and articles about the ways and solutions to protect and try to save the environment, reducing the carbon dioxide emission.

- the Geothermal energy ; use the energy of high temperature water under the soil to create energy and electricity

- easy everyday life actions ; WWF provide a guidelines to show that there are many esay ways to save energy

- Change the way we use light, heat and cool can contribute to reduce the consumption pf energy and the the carbon dioxide emission.

Your team is doing a really good job of finding different articles related to a single topic, in this case endangered species. Some questions I have based on your summaries and your blog postings are:
1) Why should we care if bees, wolves, or forests are becoming endangered? How will the loss of these species impact human life?
2) Is the honeybee only endangered in the US? Or is it all over the world?

I'm thinking about Chia Yu's blog post from a few weeks ago - do you think adopting an endangered animal will help protect them and/or get them off of endangered species lists? You might want to consider Chia Yu's article when you work on the final project:

I find an article about the consequences of losing tropical rain forests at "http://rainforests.mongabay.com/0901.htm":
The Article gives the following consequences:
“By destroying the tropical forests, we risk our own quality of life”
1. Gamble with the stability of climate and local weather
2. Threaten the existence of other species
3. Undermine the valuable services provided by biological diversity
4. Loss of ecological services provided by tropical rainforests and related ecosystems.
5. Loss of valuable services such as erosion prevention, flood control, Water treatment, fisheries protection, and pollination.
6. Reduces the availability of renewable resources like timber, medicinal plants, nuts and fruit."
7. Affecting global climate and biodiversity.
8. Loss of the main source of Oxygen O2 which is the fuel for all living creatures on this earth.

Hi environment team - I just found this audio piece about what people are doing to help the environment. Check it out if you're interested (this would be a good thing to report about if you're interested in improving your listening skills!):
