     Minnesota in All Four Seasons

        by Abby Moreira

Minnesota is well known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes and for its rigorous winter. It is true that things get pretty cold in Minnesota and there are days with a lot of snow, but there's more to Minnesota than just cold winters. The state that gives us five months to enjoy snowball fights also offers fun things to do all year around. During winter, spring, summer and fall, there is always a good place to go and many outdoor activities to enjoy.

       Let it snow...

It is not necessary to say that winter in Minnesota is very cold and intense. Because of the huge amount of snow, the state is very famous for its activities in the snow. There are many places where you can practice your abilities on the snowboard and it is kind of common and expected. However, a different and very interesting thing to do in Minnesota during the winter time is fishing. Yes! As the lakes freeze, villages of ice appear above the best fishing spots. According to Greg Breininng in his article "Wintertime, and Fishing Is Easy", one of the best places to visit and go fishing is Mille Lacs Lake in central Minnesota, where the icehouses or fish houses are built on the frozen lakes. It is very simple and permits a bunch of guys to hang out, having a couple of beers while fishing. Mille Lacs Lake is one of the state's best fishing lakes and it relly gets hot during the winter.

      April showers bring May flowers...

The snow is melted, and April showers are preparing the soil to bloom beautiful flowers. The birds are flying back, the bees are doing there jobs and everything seems to wake up from a long and cold winter. As presented by "Explore Minnesota", springtime also means a lots of baby animals on the farm and a good place to see Mother Nature's miracle is Elk River, a small and bucolic town. The Baby Animal Weekend is a traditional event that happens in May and it attracts many families and is a great place to learn about the rural areas of Minnesota.

      Summer Fun!

It is getting hot in Minnesota because it is summer time, but this wonderful state offers us 10,000 options to cool down and have fun. There are so many activities to do outdoors that no one wants to stay inside their houses. According to Breining in the article “Room to Raom in Canoes and Snowmobiles”, a great place to kick back and relax is Ely, a famous town that "attracts nature-seekers, artists, adventures and globe-trotting gadabouts". It is very common seeing cars carrying canoes and families camping around the lakes during the months of July and August. Ely is definitely a hot spot in the summertime.

The Autumn leaves of red and gold...

The summer is over, but the fun is not. The fall is coming and an explosion of color happens on trees. Minnesota is covered by a red and gold that gives a nice atmosphere and invites us to enjoy the Autumn's days. It is getting a little chilly, but the Land of 10,000 Lakes has many things to do. A great place to visit during the Autumn is the North Shore in Minnesota. The area offers many activities and special events during the fall season as the "North Shore Fall Color Tour". You can also see the beautiful show of bird migration or enjoy the outdoors hiking in the North Shore area.

      In All Four Seasons...

... Minnesota has a lot of attractions. It is fantastic to travel around the Land of 10,000 Lakes and find out its beauty... the bright snow flakes, the miracle of nature, the cool water and gold color on the tree! It can be winter or summer, fall or spring... Minnesota offers many things to do indoors and outdoors... So, prepare your soul and spirit to have fun all year around in Minnesota!

Great article, Hebe. I looked at the link to the ice-fishing story from the New York times. Did you have a chance to look at the slideshow? Those ice-shanties are nicer than that house I grew up in! Wow! I agree with Melanie - this article would be really useful for incoming ESL students. The way you organized this article was very effective and the pictures really helped make the article seem complete and professional. Nice work!
