Melanie: A little piece of China

Page history last edited by melanie 15 years, 5 months ago

We all sometimes search for a perfect place to share a great time with friends. And it is better if this place is located in a friendly neighborhood near by other wonderful bars and restaurants to continue the evening in a fantastic way.

That place exists and it is called  "Chino Latino". It is located in the famous and animated Uptown area at Hennepin Avenue and Lagoon Avenue. The first impression is that you would probably never guess that there is a place like that when you see the entrance of the restaurant. It looks like a nightclub entrance, pretty dark, with two doors. But when inside, you'll discover a lively and noisy place, crowded with young people for the majority. The first floor is full of small tables for groups of two to four people and the bar, where people usually share a drink while waiting for their table. The atmosphere is friendly. Walls are sweet colored and candles are everywhere offering a very warmful feeling or romantic if you are here for a date.

After waiting for the lovely girl who walks all around the restaurant barndishing a sign with your name on it, meaning that your table is ready – you can invite all your friends to have a seat around the circle table, which is more friendly to discuss all together. With any luck, you'll get a table in the lower floor, which is located in front of the open, busy kitchens.  The tables around you are full of excited people celebrating a birthday, a graduation or simply Saturday night fever.

The waiter is coming. He has a nice appearance, cool but polite to introduce you the concept of the restaurant. The principle is simple: Sharing. And for that, in the middle of the table you will find a turning table. Difficult to understand the first time, the menu is full of many dishes, sides, specialties, drinks and so on. If you don’t master English, your first time will be tough though!. But every chinese and latino specialities are here.   When every guest has agreed about the dishes they will share, you can wait for your food with pitchers of sangria, which is not too bad for the price and for an American restaurant.  After waiting about 15 minutes, food is coming to adorn the table. Chinese and Mexican food are the two main types of food provided by this place and it is usually a pretty great mix. Enchiladas, burritos, empanadas, fajitas for the latino dishes and saigon rolls, mandarin beef and Kung Pao Kitchen for the asian side. Everybody seems to enjoy the possibility of tasting different flavors and when the check comes, it is natural that everybody proposes to divide because the principle is sharing. And good surprise, it is a great quality/price deal. If you are 8 people sharing food and sangria, the final check is around $15.

However, reservation is recommended for weekend days if you are a group.

Melanie,

I had been there before and I loved... as you said its principle is share.
I think you gave a nice review in a way we can feel the atmosphere... The only thing I didn't get was the sentence: "By any chance..." I feel that something is missing...

:-p

You describe the restaurnt very clear and easy to understand. Your review has all the informations about the food, atmosphere, clientele and price.
The idea of putting the restaurant's website is very helpfull but I think you also should put it's address as a complementary information.

I didn't know Chino Latino served "family style." I guess it works well with that thing in the middle of the table that goes around. We used to call that a "lazy Susan." I wonder if anyone under 40 remembers that expression.

Buca is another place that serves family-style: American-Italian food in big portions. I don't think it has a great reputation, however.

Great review, Melanie! I really liked your description of the atmosphere and the descriptions of the different foods - what a great east meets west eatery!
